Writing and traumatic experience
US poet John Berryman once wrote, “The artist is extremely lucky who is presented with the worst possible ordeal which will not actually kill him. At that point he’s in business.” What an agent provocateur! I urge young writers not to seek thrills that might kill, but instead seek to become happy wordsmiths. But should they happen to experience something traumatic, then by all means let it into their work.
